Mom’s Kitchen: A Mother’s Day Gift of Recipes and Recollections

Ah, Mother’s Day. Remember when you were small, and Mom was everything? Back then, your world revolved around the music of Mom’s voice… the padding of her footsteps, and savory aromas wafting from her kitchen, permeating the house with the promise of delicious things to come.

Remember rainy afternoons, and Mom’s golden grilled cheese with a thick slab of red-ripe garden tomato? Or how about the Spaghetti-Os that Mom said had “no nutritional value,” but even so you could always count on Wednesday mornings with Mom ladling warm spoonfuls into your plastic Thermos before popping the cup-top into place and sending you off to school. Remember gooey chocolate birthday cakes that Mom baked and frosted herself, and would later scrub off your cheeks and chin with the corner of her dinner napkin? You never could figure out how those crumbs got there, but Mom could spot a chocolate cake mishap from a mile away.

We all have our own distinct memories of life and meals in Mom’s kitchen… the recipes that as a child maybe you didn’t care for one way or the other, but then you came home from college and suddenly all you wanted more than anything in the world was a plate piled high with Mom’s pot roast, carrots and mashed potatoes. So this Mother’s Day, instead of picking up a last-minute gift at the jewelry cart in the mall or grabbing a potted plant at the nursery down the road… why not gift-wrap some of those cherished recipes and recollections that you and your brothers and sisters grew up with. Give Mom a taste of yesterday. Create a book of favorite family recipes and memoirs from Mom’s Kitchen.

There are no hard and fast rules for creating a memento of this kind. Your Mother’s Day cookbook can be whatever you’d like it to be. If arts and crafts is your cup of tea, pick up a brightly colored photo album at the local craft store, one that you can hand-print personal stories right onto the pages and fill with photos from your childhood. If you’re graphically gifted, create your cookbook on the computer. You can even turn your Mother’s Day cookbook into a web page if you’re familiar with HTML.

The most complicated part of this Mother’s Day creation will of course be the information-gathering. Luckily, if you have several brothers and sisters, then you likely have plenty of memories to work with. Hand out Mother’s Day Homework; ask everyone to poke around the attics of their minds and jot down their best moments from a lifetime of eating, chattering, fighting, laughing and loving in Mom’s kitchen. Was there one favorite food that Mom only prepared on special occasions? What about an ethnic dish that you secretly loved but would never confess it to your playmates from school? Think of those hilarious dinnertime mishaps, perhaps something involving loose baby teeth and corn on the cob. Remember those little brother antics around the supper table that we all had to deal with… Or how about all the times you slipped your green beans to Harry the hound dog when Mom’s back was turned?

Once everyone’s submitted their Mother’s Day Remember Whens, have one stealthy family member root around in Mom’s old recipe files when she’s not around and collect the epicurean evidence of Mom’s chef-like wizardry in the kitchen. If you can match a memory of Mom’s cooking with an actual recipes of hers that you found buried in the bottom of the kitchen drawer, include these together in one entry of your cookbook. If not… that’s okay, too.

Finally, you’ll need a volunteer to collect photos, and also scan them if this Mother’s Day cookbook will be designed on the computer. Rummage through the old family photo albums and picture boxes and pull out all the snapshots of holiday meals around the dinner table. Maybe you have one of Mom chopping and Dad carving side by side on Thanksgiving Day. What about those classic birthday cake pics and summer barbecues? Any meal-related photos you can find will serve as the basis for your Mother’s Day Cookbook.

How many recipes should you include? Ten is a good number, but if you have more than ten by all means load up. If you have only five, that’s okay too, as long as your presentation is attractive and the feeling is there, which it no doubt will be if everyone puts their all into the project. Again, this is your Mother’s Day recipe book, created with love… and that means there is no “wrong” way to do this. On Mother’s Day, have every family member pitch in with a covered dish they made themselves… to create a stupendous dinner of all Mom’s favorite foods that she can enjoy without lifting a finger. After dessert (homemade chocolate cake from Mom’s recipe box, of course), present your family gift, tell your Mom how much you love her and feel really good about yourselves as a family. After all the years your mother spent nourishing your belly and soul with love, comforting and delicious foods, you gave her back a truly meaningful Mother’s Day gift that she’ll cherish for the rest of her days.

Gambling Stories

One of the oldest sources of entertainment, a combo of games that involve not just players but most importantly money, has a history of making millionaires as well as turning many of them bankrupt, gambling is an activity with a difference. Since time memorial gambling is the favorite pastime of people across the globe. For some gambling is the best means to merry-making whereas for countless others it is the ideal way to make huge amount of effortless money in a short while.

With the passage of time, gambling has taken many forms. In early years gambling was all about throwing dice and shuffling cards. But now there are several different versions of gambling such as slot machines, gambling online, betting on horse and car races etc. This has not just introduced gambling in almost every corner of the world but has also popped up the number of gaming aficionados throughout.

Since the lure of gambling is escalating day-by-day, print as well as media has started taking keen interest in informing people about various aspects of gambling. One such really hot info on gambling is about gambling stories.

Like any other game there are numerous tales (true and fictional) associated with gambling too. In fact gambling can be said to have maximum number of stories hanging behind. While on the one hand these stories largely amuse the public on the other hand the stories generate good business for print and media. These channels of information and entertainment make huge amount of money by presenting the actual stories in some different forms or by developing one of their own stories. So what more can one expect from gambling but that it can fetch money even though you do not actually gamble.

Since gambling is an exciting and precarious subject, several interesting stories are associated and can be formulated on it. It is seen that by and large gambling tales intrigue human beings. For what can be more exciting than knowing how various scandals that have rocked the world of sports or politics occurred or the stories that involving people who were once quite famous.

The enticement of gambling stories is depicted from the fact that movies made on them such as Oceans 11 did remarkably well and turned out to be big blockbusters. Moreover in this era when reality shows dominate the entire tube world, banking on the obsession and vogue for gambling stories, ESPN could come up with a fiction based program, Tilt. Tilt was the creation of the writers of the popular gambling movie Rounders. This show featured a plot based around the group that is described as a group of lowlifes. These lowlifes were in turn nicely manipulated or governed by a powerful person.

It is due to the intense liking of people that producers keep repeating this theme in different shows. Similarly in the literary world the 19th century English novel, Gambling by Michael Flavin turned out to be a great success. The book presented different sides of gambling, something that could be cited in the novels written on gambling in 1800s.

Gaming Notebooks, Custom Built Notebooks And Mids An Evolving Market

Laptops seem to be the current in thing this year. But take note if you want the latest tech than you need to build up some patience as there could be component shortages. It doesn’t look like anything will obstruct the growth of laptops at present. Whatever you do you’re dealing with technology that is evolving all the time so its tough to keep up to date.

There seems to be a lot more selection and attainability of gaming laptops these days. Adequate gaming laptops can be purchased pretty cheap for medium gaming needs. In my opinion laptops are pretty good for gaming. Speed is much better than ever before. With the new found speed also came along more sleeker designs. Desktop Pc’s are bigger and eat greater amounts electricity so no matter how great gaming laptops have got desktops will always operate faster. Gaming laptops will without a doubt become sleeker and more powerful in the future and it will be exciting to see.

Custom built laptops have been around for a great length of time now and despite international companies selling pre-built laptops through retail it looks like there will constantly be computer assemblers out there prepared to build something specific to your desires. I like the thought that high quality parts go into some custom laptops. I like the idea that you can on occasions even specify what brands you require. Lets face it. You possibly are not like the masses and hence average laptop computers won’t do. Custom laptops give a solution to this. There’s plenty of companies providing custom laptops, with exceptional customer service. This would be a big attractor to a few niche sectors.

I’m actually waiting to see what notebooks hit the market next. Notebooks totally for accessing the net etc are hitting the market one after the other. Its insane how one smart laptop has made a new market. Ideally people would desire an ultramobile computer with a 15″ lcd. I’m sure a couple of brands are already working on such plans. It would not shock me to see miniture gaming laptops in the next 3 years time. What will be launched next? Your prediction is as good as mine.

The Gaming Laptops from Rizeon are really good.

Piecing It All Together

There’s a little known secret we writers like to keep to ourselves, because we fear that if word got out, readers would immediately become disillusioned and abandon us. It’s not as bad as a reviewer spoiling a twist in the plot of a book, I suppose. Those people should be tarred with onion dip, feathered with potato chips and released to a crowd of hungry football fans on the day of the Super Bowl. But it is a little like the magician showing you how he fooled you.

Here’s the secret: stories are rarely written from beginning to end without rough spots along the way.

This might sound obvious, but if you’re a good writer it should never be obvious to the reader. Your stories should read seamlessly. I know the process is anything but seamless. Piecing Frankenstein’s monster together was less daunting. You’ve got stitches all over the page. Scotch tape. Different colored inks. Scribbles in the margins. Stop and goes. And this is your third draft. But after that final draft, all of this must be invisible to the reader.

What you should take away from this is the understanding that you have incredible freedom as a writer. No one has to ever see your early drafts, your wastepaper basket full of crumpled paper, that climax that was so ingenious when you first thought of it but turned out to be a cliché on the page. Those are yours to keep. No one need ever read them.

The process doesn’t have to be painful, either. In fact, if you remove some of the constraints you place on yourself as a writer, it can be down right enjoyable. For instance, you don’t always have to write a story from beginning to end. Connie Willis likes to write her endings first, then write the story back toward the beginning. Jeffrey Deaver prefers to spend months working out every detail of his story in an outline, with specific places for twists. Dean Koontz, who used to outline his stories, now lets his characters provide the impetus for his books. He follows along behind and lets himself experience surprise much as his readers will.

Every writer has to find what works best for him. And every writer has to understand that what works best for this story might not work best for the next. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Don’t be afraid to let go and see where it takes you. (This will, of course, be easier if you stuff a dirty sock into the mouth of that little editor sitting on your shoulder. You know who I’m talking about. He’s the one who never has anything nice to say. So do that now. Dig out a dirty sock and use it.)

What I’d like you to take away from this is the comfort that a word on a piece of paper (or on a computer screen, for that matter) is not the same as a word etched in stone. It’s okay to work on the description of a character until you get restless, then toy with the opening sentence or try reworking the dialogue in that early scene. It’s okay to toss out pages, try different words, add scenes. Tinkering goes hand-in-hand with creativity.

And again … no one will ever know.

It may resemble Frankenstein’s monster to you, but all the reader will see is a living, breathing story.

Just don’t forget to pull the stitches before you’re finished.

The Benefits of Chanting

Chanting, or the yoga of sound as it is known, has been used for a zillion years as a means to connect with the divine. If you look for its meaning in one of those spiritually tuned books, you will find that chanting is the “harmonious vocalization of key words, names and phrases that are used in ritual to attune oneself, raise energy and become centered.”

Chanting is a means of preserving health and well-being. Even medical science has accepted this. Research shows that the use of sound can stabilize heart rate, reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, produce endorphins and aid the process of metabolism.

Scientists too have accepted the health benefits of meditation, proof of which was seen as a cover story in Time magazine titled “Meditation works,” detailing the scientific research that shows it can profoundly affect the body and actually reshape the brain.

Says an expert, “When we chant, it cleanses the mind like water cleanses the body.” Mantra helps us relax. A relaxed state of mind is a sign of good mental and physical health.

Good for you Body

It is rather simple. Chanting is actually the first step to meditation. It focuses on a simple phrase and melody and repeats it over and over. The repetition relaxes the mind, and the body thus becomes ready to meditate.

Good for your Mind

Psychologists, too, believe that chanting or meditating enhances a sense of well-being and helps the mind focus on a particular thought, which results in lowering stress levels. Chanting has a considerable effect on the mental health of a person as it helps in cutting down stress and gives rise to a feel good factor. But how much one actually benefits depends largely on one’s own belief in this.

A word of caution though: Chanting should be done with proper pronunciation at the specified time with reverence and alertness. A definite mantra has a definite sound and vibration which has a definite effect on particular parts of the body.

Art of the Matter:

Chant along as a form of meditation: Chant a personal prayer and you will find yourself transported to another realm. It will activate your body’s natural healing processes. To prepare a chanting space, light incense, a candle, or oil lamp. Place flowers before your favorite sacred object or in a vase before you, and then chant along with a CD.

For yoga or exercise: Use chants to practice yoga or movement-type meditations such as Tai Chi or Chi Gong. You may also use the music. When you exercise; the chanting will facilitate movement and flow. The music will stimulate and emotional component that will enhance your yoga/exercise.

So now go ahead, chant and be happy.

Mountaineer Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Everest

Nepalese climber, 76, oldest climber to scale the top of the Mount Everest Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. More than 3258 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Therefore, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Andrew Brash with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Min Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. His first found him within 194 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Mt Everest to finish what he had started.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Everest is shared by two countries. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. Sherchan just 13 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

“Chomolungma or Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Mt Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Andrew Brash returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. This year French climber Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Everest after reaching the peak of earlier this season.

Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

Min Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Chomolungma or Mount Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali.

Discover the Brilliant Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is considered to be the largest colonised castles around today and the eldest in continuous occupation (over nine hundred years). It’s 1 of the Queen’s 3 key homes, and is repeatedly thought to be easily her most favourite home. The Royal flag flies over the Round Tower of Windsor Castle every time the Queen is in residence – at other times, the Union Jack flag flutters in its place.

Samuel Pepys once proclaimed the Castle to be “the single most passionate castle in the world.” That was believed in sixteen-sixty-six and the equivalent has been said today.

Windsor Castle Absorbing History:

The start of Windsor can be seen in the beginning of the 7th century Saxon hamlet of Windlesora, where the present day community of Old Windsor can be located. The settlement of Windsor is commonly identified as “New Windsor” – the actual phrase “new” being taken in a relative sense! Buy Windsor Castle tickets at great prices from Enjoy England.

Windsor Castle was at first constructed by the distinguished William the Conqueror, following his invasion of England in ten-sixty-six. The original structure was assembled from wood with mud ramparts. Palace held an understandable tactical position on a big hill just above the River Thames, & was a fraction of a set of palaces around London, with the Tower of London, one whole days ride away, at its hub.

The Castle was then later reconstructed in stone, & rose in importance over the subsequent years. In recent times Henry II made the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the building’s chief role became that of a royal palace. The Castle has stayed for the most part unchanged ever since the start of the 19th century, apart from the renovation job that followed the great fire in 1992.

How DATA is LOST

Over 95% of the people and businesses that I speak with have experienced data loss. However the sad fact is that the majority of businesses are woefully unprepared and do not understand the serious risk of data loss.
Do you have a disaster recovery plan?

The data that you store on your computer can be lost in many ways. Many people are not aware of the various ways that their data can be placed in jeopardy.

First, there are the obvious ways:

Physical damage to the computer, such as fire or water damage, is one surefire way to lose all the data on your computer. Although insurance may cover the physical damage to your machine(s), and you may be able to replace the actual hardware, no insurance policy can resurrect your data.

Another common way that individuals lose the data they have worked so hard to build up is THEFT. Much like damage done to your computer via various natural disasters, insurance may cover the physical hardware, but no policy will be able to save the information stored on your hard drive and other physical media.

Without some form of backup solution, your data is at risk every day.

There are many other things that can happen that can cause partial or full data loss. Other common occurrences are:

Data corruption (failed CRC or MD5 checks),

Hard drive failure (the older a hard disk gets the closer you are getting to the MTBF, or “mean time between failure” that every disk is rated for at the factory),

OS failure (it is not uncommon for a machine to fail to reboot after having critical system files replaced, such as during the application of a Windows Service Pack or driver update).

Human error – simply accidentally deleting a file or directory happens more often than you would think. Not to mention the “not so accidental” deletion by a disgruntled employee.

Viruses and worms – even though protection for these digital pests is readily available and in general use, loss of data associated with them is still widespread.

These are just a few of the pitfalls that can plague the computer that has not had backups done in a timely manner.

Right about now, you may be asking yourself: “What can I do?” Actually, there is one simple solution to all your data integrity needs: offsite data backup.

Unlike backups you may be used to doing with tape drives or other removable media, offsite data backup provides a much more transparent, easy to use solution, as well as having the added security of storing your files in a secure location that is guaranteed to keep them safe (remember, if your office building catches fire, not only does your workstation lose it’s data, but your tape backups will most likely be destroyed as well, barring the use of expensive fireproof storage.

Offsite data backup is easy to set up and protects your data in the most secure, economical way possible. If you are considering implementing a data backup for your company or personal computers do yourself a favor and consider using an offsite secure backup service. This is the simplest and most effective form of disaster recovery.

Your DATA is your LIFE. Protect it.
