While I applaud the efforts of the fast food industry in attempting to provide vegetarian and more healthful alternatives to the crap they already sell on a daily basis, I have to point out shortcomings and defects in their attempts to provide vegetarian and healthy alternatives that sabotage or defeat the whole purpose of attempting to provide healthier and meat-less (vegetarian) products.

Is health or the wellbeing of the American people the main objective in selling vegetarian products or is it financial gain? Unfortunately for all the people who want to believe the fast food industry is coming around and becoming more health conscious, the fast food industry’s objective in selling vegetarian items such as the veggie burger is strictly commercial, at least right now or presently.

Why? Because until the vegetarian items are completely lacking animal byproducts, the promoting and selling of vegetarian items is to deceive fast food consumers into believing that they have a choice in eating meatless or healthier items and products, which just isn’t true

Take McDonald’s, Burger King, and the Habit for example. They all sell a veggie burger. But that veggie burger patty (if the patty itself is not entirely vegetable based) is cooked in ANIMAL LARD number one, and number two, cooked on the same grill that meat (DEAD ANIMAL FLESH) is cooked on.

All meat contains parasites and worms, and the ugliest ones that you could ever see with the human eyes. I know this personally as I have done the personal research (and have been presented research from Doctah B, Bro. Tarik, and others in the Los Angeles area) and have the nauseating photographs to show you. TOTALLY GROSS!

Some people thought they were avoiding animal byproducts by only eating French fries from the fast food restaurant, not knowing that most fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s were cooking their fries in vegetable oil mixed with beef juice. That’s right! McDonald’s add beef juice to its cooking oil for flavor, in addition to spraying the fires with a sugar solution, freezing them and shipping them off to McDonald’s franchises, and after cooking the sugar sprayed fries in beef juice (oil), sodium chloride (salt) is added and you have one of the most addictive products in America – McDonald’s French fries!

Take Subway for example, a place I used to eat at often in my early vegan days and while I was in the Corporate world. I had my places to eat at and menus to choose from. However, eating out was the exception to the rule and not the rule, as I normally prepared my own lunch. But Subway was right across the street from my place of employment and the food was much lighter than the stuff sold at the more general fast food establishments.

However, as I became more spiritual and health conscious, it started to bother me eating at establishments that served vegetarian products alongside with meat or flesh products. I used to order the Veggie Max sub sandwich from Subway. But the soy based Veggie Max patty was in a container or bin next to bacon (pig’s back end). This was not a far distance for the microscopic parasites and worms to crawl from the bacon bin to the veggie patty bin. Also, the veggie patty was cut in two with the same knife used to cut meat with. You see, it really doesn’t matter if you’re health conscious or vegan or vegetarian and the person preparing your food (or product) is not. To the fast food employee, they’re just preparing another product totally oblivious to strict food sanitary preparation ethics and principles.

Another thing to point out about the Subway Veggie Max sub or sandwich is that it was (1) cooked (actually, RADIATED) in a microwave oven, (2) cooked or radiated in the same microwave oven as meat or flesh products (pork worms can’t be killed in heat because of a heat-resistant shell that forms around the worm in very high temperatures, and the only substance that can penetrate or break open that shell is the hydrochloric acid of the human body).

One day while out on the town with my children here in Glendale, California, my daughter wanted some noodles or Chow Mein and I think some vegetable-fried rice or egg rolls from Panda Express, I really can’t remember exactly the items, but I do remember asking the Panda Express employee to prepare an exclusively vegetarian plate – NO MEAT OR MEAT-BYPRODUCTS WHATSOEVER, i.e. vegetable-fried rice, Chow Mein, steamed vegetables, and to my utter shock, the employee honestly told me that NOTHING at Panda Express was vegetarian. Absolutely nothing! I said, “Even the vegetable-fried rice, noodles, and steamed vegetables?” He said “That’s right, Sir!” With a discombobulated look on my face, the employee then told me that Panda Express pours chicken juice on all of its items. So now I’m thinking about the time when time compelled me to get something on the go and I got what I thought was completely vegetarian from Panda Express.

And of course, I’ve heard similar accounts from my good Vegan comrades as well. So if you want to know a thing, ask. And by all means, don’t presume.

If you think those vegetarian corn dogs at Hot Dog On-A-Stick are vegetarian, think again! They contain egg whites (in the bread batter).

I also used to eat the vegetarian burritos at Baha Fresh Mexican Grill. I started getting headaches. Why? White flour tortillas cooked on the same grill as the slaughtered flesh (meat). So what did I do to cure the problem? I Left those burritos alone and I have been fine ever since.

I remember my early vegan days of 1997 and 1998 and thinking I was not eating any animal parts or byproducts whatsoever only to discover that those black beans I was eating from El Pollo Loco contained chunks of chicken. One day while eating these black beans, I noticed a strange substance in them. When I picked the substance up and closely analyzed it, I was disgusted to be holding a piece of chicken in my hand. Boy did I feel nauseated at this revelation and discovery. I had to let those beans go no matter how good they tasted. I refuse to let taste disillusion me into a state of poor health and into an early grave.

Vegetarian does not mean vegan! Vegan means “completely animal free, including dairy products and eggs,” whereas vegetarian means “meat-free but not dairy/eggs-free.” A vegetarian burrito at a fast food restaurant may contain cheese and sour cream (congealed cow snot or mucus). Some veggie burger patties may also contain cheese. Cheese is from an animal so how can it be animal free? While many health conscious folks and would be vegans enjoy Boca Burgers, some brands contain egg whites and cheese, so start reading the ingredient list on the box.

So although McDonald’s now has a veggie burger, just know that its veggie burger is cooked in beef oil, in addition to the fact that the veggie burger is centered between two white, refined grain buns, conventionally grown iceberg lettuce (the worst lettuce to eat and the most nutritionally deficient plant to eat) and genetically engineered tomatoes (if you want lettuce and tomatoes on your veggie burger). The same thing can be said of Burger King and the Habit’s veggie burgers.

However, if you’re on the road or out and about in society and must make a choice to eat something that is not so insalubrious, it would be a good idea to experience around with a major fast food chain’s veggie burger rather than give in to the traditional crap that has been served over the years and that you always bought and ate. However, it is better (and wiser) to seek out vegan restaurants before you actually hit the town (if you’re a health conscious individual or vegan).

I know how difficult it is to be vegan (at first) and to not have vegan eateries so easily and readily accessible, especially if you live in a small town. I’m thankful that the Greater Los Angeles area and Southern California in general is loaded with vegan spots around town to get something wholesome and nutritious to eat. The same is true for other big cities around the nation such as New York City, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco-Oakland Bay area, etc.

If you are like me, you notice when people need to take time off. They can’t concentrate, they are rude or have short fuses and they lack focus or direction. This is no way to be in a selling mode. If you deal with customers and someone brings you a big production problem, how are you going to help them? Customers don’t need attitude; they need a solution-oriented, sharp response. You can’t deliver this if you are drained. On some days you might not be able to stop because the day is too hectic and there are demands that must be met. On these days, it helps if your batteries are at fully charged. In today’s world, we must find the time to escape the hectic pace and recharge our batteries.

I was driving down the road and plugging in the cell phone to make sure my batteries wouldn’t run down. I was tired and my eyes were dropping from a long day. On this particular day, the computer seemed more like an enemy than a friend and new problems seemed like huge obstacles in my path. You know what I’m talking about. What I really wanted was a place to plug myself into and get recharged. When the days seem so long it is a mixed blessing. There is always the extra sunlight to cut the grass or do something around the house. Stuff you really don’t want to face. The trouble with the extra time is that we don’t always get the recharge we need to keep going and we run ourselves ragged. I know because I’ve become less effective and sometimes I just can’t get some things done on time when my pace is too hectic.

We each have different ways of recharging our batteries. For me, it is a leisurely walk around the neighborhood on a summer day. Now, I’m not trying to sound romantic because I often do this alone. It is a time for me to think alone and solve some of the world’s problems and many of my own. I also enjoy reading the Sunday paper with a hot cup of chocolate. I can also charge myself by cutting the lawn, washing the car or planting flowers. If we are smart, we will find time to relax and get a quick recharge. This is not just a dream world. The fact is that we need to take time for ourselves to be more effective. In some countries they take naps during the day as a way to be more effective. Now, I am not suggesting that we all take naps during the day. However, I am suggesting that we get enough rest to be effective in the day.

How does this relate to sales?

In selling it is very important for the salesperson to listen effectively to the client for opportunities. Without the proper rest, we can’t listen because we are too tired and can’t concentrate. The result is missed opportunities and missed business. When I am tired it is very difficult for me to listen effectively to anyone or anything. It has long been established that optimists live longer than pessimists, but now there is some hard evidence that people with a better sense of humor also have longer and healthier lives. Your “stay healthy” plan should include a joke and a 20-minute comedy show, to go with the broccoli and carrots.

There are now various associations and physicians specialized in the so-called therapeutic humor, who are still investigating the roles of laughter in our lives. Perhaps the most obvious of these roles is that related to the social life – jokes often allow people to connect and to bond, and sharing a good laughter is a good method to integrate in a team, to get along with the coworkers, neighbors and so on. This function is vital from the point of view of mental health, since it reduces loneliness and, with it, depression and other problems associated with it. You don’t have to be trained in stand-up comedy in order to say something funny, sometimes all you need is a change of perspective or the courage to make fun at your own expense.

Humor is an invaluable asset in crisis situations, when it helps us calm down and reduce the levels of stress (and all the negative effects stress has on health). It is often considered that, among patients with very severe diseases, those with an upbeat approach, who are capable of making jokes about their situations, have the best chances to defeat the illness. So far, there have been no scientific studies to prove this, but the patients themselves report feeling better after joining an activity with humorous potential, even if it’s just watching a comedy show together with some friends or with other patients.

Recent researches suggest that laughter influences more than our mental framework, it actually has a positive effect on the physical aspect as well. It has been widely accepted, for some time, that laughter increases the pain resistance level, but the theory is still not proven. In fact, very few studies have yet been made about the relation between comedy and health, but those existing seem to indicate that a good joke may lower the blood pressure, improve memory and cognitive functions and boost the immune system. Moreover, these results are not short-term only: it seems that a good sense of humor may protect you against heart diseases and alter your biochemical state to a level where the organism produces more antibodies. The lack of research in the field is due to the fact that people have always assumed that laughter is good for your health (along with an apple a day and a breath of fresh air), but little has been done to analyze this in depth.

There is also a “bad” humor (same as there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol). This category includes the approach that makes people feel miserable about themselves, or angry, upset and vengeful, as well as the skeptic and cynic attitude, which is often the front for deep depression and indifference. Jokes directed at other people are also “bad” humor, along with ethnic, racial and sexist jokes, which are born out of frustration, not out of optimism and cheerfulness. Also, people who often make fun of themselves hide a low self esteem, which is only worsened with every funny joke they invent (there is a good reason why clowns and successful comedy actors are often perceived as sad and depressed in their real lives).

If you decide to use laughter as a therapeutic method, the first obvious issue is that there are no harmful side effects, and you’ve got nothing to lose. The second issue is that you can actually improve your sense of humor in time, same as any other skill or ability, by constant training and exposure to jokes and comedy. Next time you go to the movies, buy a ticket for a comedy, no matter how dumb the poster looks. When you read the paper, don’t forget to check out their daily cartoon too. Spend ten minutes every day reading jokes, and, when you find some you like, share them with your friends. (And when your boss catches you reading jokes instead of working, tell him it’s just therapy, he can’t stop your from taking your medication at work, right?) Last but not least, try to find the funny side of the small things that happen every day around you – there is always something absurd or plain stupid going on right near you, which may provide five minutes of good laugher, which, in turn, may unblock some arteries and keep the heart attack far away.

Sorry, But I’m Not Buying From You!

Former General Electric CEO and legendary manager, Jack Welch, nailed the problem recently when he said there’s just too much beating around the bush and indirectness in corporate communications. People are more interested in not hurting each others’ feelings than in improving productivity, and we simply need more frankness, says Welch.

In my own small way I’m trying to remedy this situation, especially when I deal with salespeople. For example, I put out a request for a proposal and about ten companies responded. Quickly, I boiled the list down to five, called the references of the three in which I had genuine interest, and then I selected the contract winner.

Within minutes of making my decision, I phoned the others and told them, nicely but directly, that I had selected a different firm. (Of course, I left open the door to a few runners-up, in the event the chosen-one falters down the road.) Most of those I called were surprised, if not flummoxed by the fact that someone like me took the time to say, “Sorry, but I’m not buying from you!”

I did it for several reasons:

(1) It’s courteous, and what comes around, goes around. I’m a salesperson, too, and I appreciate frankness.

(2) It saves everybody’s time, and this improves productivity. I’ve calculated that I have to leave at least three non-answered voice mails or messages to figure out that someone is uninterested, or is possibly ducking my calls. These calls may be spaced over a week or two, and during that time I’m thinking I still have a living, breathing buyer when I’m really chasing a phantom.

(3) Although I have my vendor’s hat on when I’m selling, in many cases, I’m also a potential or actual customer. The person who fails to return my calls at Countrywide dooms her company to not even getting close to earning my mortgage business, the next time I need one.

(4) It’s a golden opportunity to give and to get high quality feedback. I would have gladly told any potential suitor how they missed the mark and why I made my selection, but no one asked! By the way, price had nothing to do with my choice. More subtle, but powerful and significant factors entered into the equation, which every vendor should hear about, so they can improve.

(5) It takes a lot of energy to avoid someone’s calls. Why waste the time of your receptionist by asking that he or she join your conspiracy by being forced to say you’re in a meeting, on conference call, or by lying with whatever the excuse of the day happens to be?

(6) If you waste my time, it becomes a cost of doing business, and I have to pass along this waste through higher prices, lower quality, or inferior service. Which would you prefer?

(7) There’s too much frustration and anger in the world, already. Why add to it?

So, then next time you have a choice, try using directness. In the long run, it will help us all.

10 Bizarre Ways To Blow Up Your Sales!

1. Team-up with your weaker competitors to beat your stronger competitors. You can create win/win joint venture and cross promotion deals with them.

2. Design your site so it will be worth bookmarking. Your visitors will bookmark your web site if it’s full of free original content like articles, ebooks, etc.

3. Offer your customers back-end products. It is easier to sell to existing customers. If you do not have a back-end product, join an affiliate program.

4. Increase the perceived value of your product. You could offer an affiliate program, give away free bonuses or use famous endorsements on your ad.

5. Remind your visitors to promote your web site. Use phrases like; “Refer This Our Web Site To A Friend” or “Link To Our Web Site”

6. Make your testimonials more powerful. You can include pictures, hand written signatures and contact information with each testimonial.

7. Up-sell to all your customers. You could sell add- on products, deluxe products, extra parts, related products, add-on services, etc.

8. Place your ad in targeted e-zines. Ask the owner if you could place your ad in a higher position in exchange for a percentage of the ad’s profits.

9. Use permission marketing to increase your sales. You simply ask people to sign-up to your e-mailing list. They’ll already be interested in messages or ads.

10. Provide a privacy statement and all your contact information on every page of your web site. This’ll persuade your visitors and prospects to trust you.

Muscle Building Workout Poundages – Are You Lifting Enough Weight?

We all know that in order to make progress with your weight training, whether it’s building muscle mass, or slimming down and building a long, lean, athletic body, you need to constantly challenge your body and the easiest measurable way to do this is to lift ‘heavy’ and constantly increase your workout poundages. But what’s ‘heavy’?

Many people wonder if the weights they are using are heavy enough. First, it’s important to realize that heavy is a relaitve concept and many factors come into play – your overall genetic makeup being the most important.

But even more specific factors come into play, such as rib cage size, length of the forearms, etc.

Somebody with long arms will have a difficult time becoming a great bench presser. But someone with shorter arms and a natural barrel chest physique, has a great chance to be a top bench presser.

This is why you sometimes see bigger bodybuilders who can’t lift as much as people that are smaller, muscle-wise than they are. So, whether or not you are lifting heavy, you should only take into consideration what you were lifting before and what you are lifting now. Your progress is the most important thing, not where you started or where you end up.

Of course, everyone wants a challenge and a goal to shoot for when it comes to their workout poundages so here are some goals and poundages you can go after. Serious bodybuilders will probably go well beyond these numbers but for most people they are quite good.

Bench Press

Bodyweight is a good goal here, as long as it’s for at least 5 or more reps. Sets of five reps or more with 130 to 150 percent of bodyweight is respectable for anyone involved in weight training programs.

Squats

Working out with bodyweight for sets of five or more reps is respectable for all-round conditioning. However, if you really want to make gains a nd build muscle, you will want to work up to 150 percent of your bodyweight for sets of five to eight reps. If you’really serious, you’ll shoot for 175 percent.

Keep in mind, I am talking about full squats here. If you’re serious about making big muscle mass gains with your weight training, you need to do squats.

Deadlifts

150 percent of bodyweight for sets of five to six reps. Most serious trainees shoot for 200 percent of bodyweight as a reasonable goal on the regular deadlift, in time.

For stiff-legged deadlifts, shoot for between bodyweight and 125 percent of bodyweight for weightlifting sets in the 6 to 10 rep range. You may even get up to 150 percent if this is a good exercise for you.

One Arm Dumbbell Rows

Eventually you should be using 50 percent of your bodyweight in this movement. Your back is your strongest muscle and you’ll only achieve real results with real weights.

Seated Shoulder Presses

You’ll want to work up to 65 to 70 percent of your bodyweight in this weightlifting exercise for three to five sets of five to eight reps. If you use dumbbells, they should total 60 to 65 percent of you bodyweight. The lesser number is due to the fact that you have to control the dumbbells more than a barbell.

Barbell Curls

Work up to 50 to 60 percent of you bodyweight for sets of five to eight reps. It should be the same for dumbbells, since there is no extra balancing neccssary.

Working up to these weights in these bodybuilging exercises will give you quite a respectable level of strength and muscle mass(if you get your nutrition right, as well).

Keep in mind that a weight training program is the best way to build muscle mass but it’s also the best way to lose fat, completely change the shape of your body, and keep the fat off. Weight lifting is much more effective for fat loss than aerobics or dieting alone.

Some of these poundages may be very easy for you, while others are very difficult, depending on all the factors mentioned above. If you really want to make progress in building muscle, the deadlift and squat poundages are the one’s you’ll really want to hit or even surpass. Do that, and you’ll be well on your way to the muscle mass you are looking to attain.
