Sydney Botulinum treatment (BoTox for short) is now the latest style in Sydney society and now it has become a grooming must for many in the city.

However I am often stunned by the stories about the treatment.

To follow are some of the more falsehoods that we hear daily in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.

Urban Legend # 1: I may lose my facial expressions!

Research shows there are 60 or so muscles under the skin of your face. These muscles usually function harmoniously, but over a period of time lines can form. When surplus BoTox is employed the musculature which are responsible for facial expression may become too relaxed. Generally doctors use relatively small amounts to are designed to make you appear less tired, yet you will maintain your normal expression.

By using a carefully calculated quantity of the BoTox in precisely the right tissues you will have a smoothing of the lines without any compromise in facial expression.

Urban Legend # 2: Botulinum is a deadly poison!
This to some extent is correct. Its pharmaceutical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. An overdose can loosen facial muscles that you do not want relaxed and can even cause sickness.

But to help you grasp the bigger picture: an ancient chemist’s saying is that ‘everything is poisonous – all depending on the dose’. A large amount of any medicinal drug may cause sickness. Even water can kill you if you take enough.

Urban Legend # 3: It will hurt!
Your hairs are larger than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. A lot of individuals have stated that the shots are not as painful as bug bites. Certainly not as painful as getting a blood test.

Urban Legend # 4: BoTox will numb my face!
This is completely incorrect. BoTox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerves. BoTox only impacts on the relaxation of muscles.

Urban Legend # 5. You can’t stop getting BoTox or you will wrinkle quicker than ever!
Again this is simply false.

A BoTox treatment will last about 3 months. Further injections tend to last longer. Eventually as muscle strength returns to normal – the wrinkles will return little by little. But they will certainly not be any more pronounced than before.

Even should you don’t have BoTox ever again – any wrinkles will most likely be a little less noticeable than if you had not been treated. This, of course is mainly so because you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
