Building Image Equity Part One

Building Image Equity part 1 By B. Butler Most regular poker online players have well recognized and accommodated the concept of poker table image, where their previous actions and play as displayed to opponents in previous hands can impact the expectations and responses of actions thereafter. For many, this image action corresponds more to the table by table play than over a long stretch, as with the large fields of online play we often are meeting new players more often than we’re hitting the same players from earlier sessions. These long period tendencies, though, do still have resonance and effect in the short term, especially when it comes to recognizing what people have seen you do in the short term, and thereby knowing what they might think of you. When trying to decide how to act in the future, this image effect can lead toward making decisions differently than you might have in a completely removed situation. By adding up these expectations and evaluating them against your Everest poker opponent’s preceding action, you may well be able to give extra weight to moves based off of that image equity rather than what is purely the best mathematical situation. Just as much as you consider pot odds, implied odds, and odds of hitting your hand, you should equally be weighing in that image’s influence, responding to your opponents in the light of how they might be responding to you.

Play Smart Even when Big Stacked

When playing the game of online poker, having lots of poker online chips is a wonderful thing. Not only does it mean you have a lot of money, but it allows allows you a wide variety of playing style options. You can play aggressively, if you like, and “bully” the table around with your big stack, win lots of blinds with big raises, or any number of things. That said, just because you have a lot of poker chips doesn’t mean you should play stupidly and throw them around with wanton. I was playing some online poker this week, and sat down at a medium limit table where one fellow had a significant amount more chips than than everyone else. Whether he accumulated them during the course of play or simply bought in with a lot of money, I don’t know. Anyway, this guy was raising every hand and betting at every pot and really not playing with any strategy. In fact, one hand he made a big raise, and someone went all-in over the top of him, and he called. I’m figuring both of them probably have high pocket pairs. Well, the one guy who reraised all in did. The other, big stack fellow turned over an 8-3!? The moral of the story is, just because you have a lot of chips and can raise with anything, doesn’t mean you should. If you play judiciously, your chip stack will just keep increasing, rather than shrinking.

It’s Only a Matter of Time

There are a myriad of differences that separate the Average Man player from his professional counterpart. For example, the Average Man tends to have a far less extensive collection of baseball caps and sunglasses, not to mention a smaller bankroll and a noticeable lack of endorsement deals. These are big differences of course, but I propose that the main difference between the Average Man poker online player and a professional is a matter of time.

The casual player indulges his poker urge at times that are convenient to fit around a nine to five job. This could mean an hour at lunch break, a few moments in the morning, and possible a few hours at night before he is snug in bed by eleven. He needs to be early to bed so that he can arise early enough to get to his office and start the daily grind all over again.

Professional online poker players work on a different time schedule. They clock in at eleven at night and work until the wee hours of the morning. They cannot hold a nine to five job because they are working all night long. It’s a time commitment that most people can’t do.

If you are willing to make the commitment to a time schedule, you could consider the pro life. Otherwise don’t bother thinking about it. Not everyone can deal with the different time schedule.

High Card Defined

The lowest holding in a five card poker hand is when there are five cards all of different rank, which do not all share the same suit and do not form a 5 card sequence. In the event that no player makes a pair or better in a given poker hand, the player with the highest high card would win the pot, with the hands compared high card by high card until one hand has a better ranking than the other. Two players with the same high card sequence for all five cards would tie.

A high card hand is referred to by the highest card in the group, such as ‘Queen high’ or ‘Ace King high.’

The lowest possible hand in poker, then, is 7 5 4 3 2, as combinations lower would form a straight.

The probability of being dealt no pair in a five card poker hand is 50.12%, which therein establishes that it is almost coin flip for any two cards to improve by the end of a full hand.

Nicknames for having only a high card at showdown might be ‘no pair,’ ‘air,’ ‘junk,’ ‘crap,’ ‘I missed,’ and ‘whoops.’ Often bluffing becomes an alternative to having showdown a high card hand.

Watching the Poker Pros

Most of the televised poker shows feature professional players. These are the players with the poker skills and sponsorship programs that would make an ordinary player feel inadequate. They are the best of the best. In a lot of ways televised poker shows represent them as a kind of celebrity that mere mortal poker players can never hope to become.

Because we spend so much time watching online poker if we like the game it is important to realize that the players on the screen are not the average player. At the very least our egos can suffer a blow if we fail to realize that they spend all of their days perfecting their skills. When we compare their poker prowess to ours, it is easy to feel inadequate. However, we don’t spend all day every day at the table.

At its most detrimental, watching professional poker players can lead average people to give up the felt. When we are shown such amazing examples of playmanship, it is easy to become completely discouraged. If we forget that the people on the screen are professional, we begin to worry that we will run into them at our local casino. Our home spun skills could never stand up to these poker sharks.

Watching the poker online pros needs to be done with a serious dose of reality. We will rarely meet players of this caliber at our local casino, so there is no need to fret your day away after watching televised poker.

Straddle up

The straddle is a unique move that is only allowed in live cash poker games. It’s essentially a third blind doubling the big blind and can be done either on the button or just after the button (depending on venue rules). What this does is it buys you the option of acting last. So let’s take a look at how the straddle can be beneficial to your playing in a live cash game.

Now usually a straddle is a mathematically incorrect move to make. One, you’re putting double the big blind money in the pot before you even get to see your cards, and if you know anything about starting hands out of position, you’ll realize that the straddle will very rarely pay off if you’re playing tight and aggressive.

This move, however is very much a move that loose aggressive or maniacal online poker players make, some to uphold their image, and somewellsome do it just because they want to gamble a little bit.

But there is room for a straddle even if you’re a tight player despite the mathematical implications. If you’re playing in an extremely tight game, you can use the straddle to loosen things up. If you’re in a ring of nitty rocks, and you straddle, you may convince them to come along with you and put some more money in the pot. After all, the first raise has technically been done so they may be more inclined to stay for just one extra bet instead of the customary 4x big blind bet.

The second reason you may want to consider a straddle is to manipulate your table image. Let’s say you’ve been playing fairly tight and aggressive, but maybe a little looser than you usually would. Maybe it’s because you’re running good, or maybe it’s because you’re at a table full of extra tight players. In any event, regardless of the reason, a few well timed straddles can really “hurt” your image. Since all the good players see a straddle as mathematically incorrect (and you know this too, but poker is a game of risks after all), you may be able to paint yourself as just another action loving fish who’s looking to gamble it up more than a good player would when they play poker online.

But remember, this is a gambit, not something to be abused. Treat it like the checkraise, something that must be delicately timed and used appropriately. It’s not a weapon of mass destruction like the float or delayed float, but rather a tool to assist you in opening up a game or irritating other players to play at you in later rounds.

Poker Player Profile: the Super Donk

There seems to be a distinct hierarchy of player types that one encounters at a Texas Holdem poker table, who, by and large, can be fitted to a pretty standard ‘profile’ wherein you can learn to attack them based on expectations. Many of these kinds of players don’t read poker books, are gamblers, and will fall into leagues of method that often have distinct ways they can be combated or played back at.

The most commonly noticed style, and perhaps the kind that are less prevalent by percentage but much more obvious when they do appear could be known as the super donk, though often these players like to be known as ‘true gamblers.’

These guys usually claim to play a lot, seem to have enough to rebuy as much as possible, and really hate to fold a hand. No matter what you raise in what position, it doesn’t really matter to them, they are going to see the flop, and if they get a piece of it or a draw, it’s going to take some kind of insane slurp of poker gods to get them to lay it down.

These poker players tend to accumulate a lot of poker chips quickly if they don’t go broke, and will then use those chips to beat other players into playing for all their money, but in the long run, most of the time, they will leave broke.

Some players, in these instances, like to attack the players as much as possible, to take their AK when they get it and try to nail the player to the wall when they often will still need to survive what is almost a coin flip for all their money.

This kind of strategy can work if your luck holds up, but if you hit a bad card, you can find the donkey running off with all your money when they call you with 5/7 suited against your AQ and hit a pair on the turn, while you fail to improve.
