The achievement medal is a type of military medal presented as an appreciation for outstanding service and heroism to the military. Initially, the medal was meant for enlisted personnel and junior officers to recognize their contribution and those who did not qualify for higher medals like the meritous service award and commendation medals both of which were meant for senior officers. The first time the achievement award was issued was in 1961 by the US navy. It was then referred to as the Secretary of the Navy Commendation for achievement medal but was later shortened in 1965.The

After the US navy, the US coast guard was next to award the medal to its personnel in 1967.Later on in 1981 The US army and the United States air force was able to incorporate their versions of the medal. Since the Navy and Marine Corps medal was incepted, its approval could not be done by ship captains who were ranked as commander groups.Local commanders have the sole responsibility and authority of determining who deserves the award, for what and when the awarding will take place; this is done at their discretion.
