HSE Acknowledges that Safety Rules Make Convenient Excuse for Many

The Health and Safety Executive has said that several individuals and organisation make use of safety and health regulations as a convenient excuse.

Judith Hackitt made this statement in her letter to Lord Young of Graffham. Lord Young has been appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron to conduct and head a review of the health and safety regulations in use and its extent in Whitehall. He is also required to present a report on the compensation system followed. The report is to be given in to the Prime Minister’s office by summer.

Following his appointment, Ms Hackitt has offered the full cooperation of the HSE and said that the regulating body will be happy to provide ay insights and assistance in the matter. She has said that Lord Young’s review will have to extend beyond the HSE because the organisation restricts itself to dealing with real risk and identifiable hazards. However, for some time now, the HSE has been finding that the regulations which are sought to be publicised and implemented by it are being misused. These necessary precautions are in many cases being used as excuses to cover up unpopular decisions.

Several incidents where health and safety rules were used to avert decisions which would lead to huge costs for the company or individuals have been found. Since 2007, HSE has, in fact, conducted a ‘Myth of the Month‘ campaign to raise the curtain on some of these incidents.

The integration of good health and safety management systems is an essential principle of any business. The health & safety consultants from Workplace Law can assist companies in training staff to be aware of the proper health and safety procedures by identifying and improving upon awareness and attitude, and communication about safety to improve the health and safety environment within an organisation.
