Quick Guide to Starting out in Software Development

If you have just left university or are looking for a change of career, there are a plethora of potential career paths available. One that may not immediately jump into the mind is a career in software development; however, it can be quite accessible and has some distinct advantages.
For example, to get started all that is needed is a computer and a compiler (and possibly a library card so you can take out some decent programming books). If you have an internet connection, even better! There is a major amount of resources available online for practically every programming language.
Download a compiler, fire up a text editor and away you go! You can be writing your own custom software in a matter of minutes. To take things further, look at downloading an integrated development environment or IDE as they are also known. An IDE will make life easier as they allow for coding and compiling but usually have syntax highlighting, auto complete and other useful features that can male programming much quicker.
If you intend to make a career out of software development it is worth learning the languages that are used commercially, possibly enrol on a specific course or join an online group. Programming is a vast subject and although it can be quite easy to start, to become a master can take a long time.
